Lighting

I have a few ideas for lighting. i think that we need to organise a meeting at Jess's house and experiment with different lighting. For example do not stand in the first place we go to move around and see how the outcome alters. We could experiment with many techniques;
  • Flash
  • Move around
  • Use different lights (dimmer, lamps etc)
  • different times of the day
For our opening we decided on doing it in the dark because it makes the atmosphere more scary.

Location

Our location is going to be set in Jess's mums bedroom and then Jess's bedroom and also an establishing shot of Newport high street.

Props

We are going to have a lot of props used in our opening scene;

  • Lipstick
  • Mascara
  • Towel
  • bed
  • Mirror
  • phone
  • perfume
  • gun
  • hair clip

Costume

Costume plays a very important part in our film. We have three characters which is the wife, husband and the prositute. We decided on having the husband dressed smartly in a suit;

The wife; Very clean looking (well done up). Wearing black or red clothes e.g a dress, high waisted skirt. Then for her to have long dark hair with bright red lipstick.

The prostitute; Tarty clothes such as corsets, suspenders and high heels. Then her hair to be a bit greasy with lots of make up.

Pitch ideas

I was doing some research on pitch ideas today so i looked through a few other thriller films pitches.

Inception
In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception.

The dark knight
Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker, as it drives each of them to their limits.

Black swan
A thriller that zeros in on the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer and a rival.

Elite squad 2
The Brazilian most popular cinema character since "Retomada" comes back to screens. Now more mature...

These are just a few examples that i was looking for to seeif i could get any good ideas. i have noticed that they do not let much information be told it leaves you on a cliff hanger which i think is a good effect.

Final opening sequence

Today in lesson we decided to finish our opening sequence plan. This is the final plan;

1. Starts off with them in the bedroom
2. She goes for a shower leaving him in bed
3. Then focus on certain aspects of her body
4. starting with focusing on her legs when she steps out the shower and the towel dropping
5. Then the camera moves up and zooms in on parts of her body
  • Pulling up her stockings
  • Her bright red lip stick
  • Spraying her perfume
  • Hair being let loose
  • Tear drops but wiping them away in anger
6. He comes in and hugs her behind
7. When he turns see anger on her face
8. He walks off
9. She pulls open her draw
10. A gun is laying there

Costume

We have decided on having two actors in our opening scene. We have also decided that she will be wearing stockings, dress and red lipstick. In my opinion i think that she should be in black. Our male character should look as if he has been in bed to show that they have slept together.

Open and closed narrative

We looked at open and closed narrative. An open narrative is when a film could go different ways and when watching it not knowing what is going to happen. A closed narrative is knowing what is going to happen a good example of this is a working title because most of the time it ends with a happy ending. For our opening scene i think that open narrative would be better because it leaves people wanting more and builds suspense.

Enigma code

In today's lesson we looked at a few techniques that we could add in to our film to build an atmosphere. We looked at enigma code, this is when the producer purposely adds things into a film to get people questioning and wondering. There a few good examples of this in the film seven;

When the audience look at this the questions start because they would wonder firstly who he is, secondly who are the pictures of and thirdly why has someone got them.

Having writing in the shot makes you wonder who wrote it, why have they written it and builds suspense because someone is either in trouble, needs help etc.

Showing props wants you to know if they are going to kill someone etc. This helps build tension because you don't have a clue who is going to be killed.

Having a clip shot of a helicopter with police written on it makes you wonder why they are involved.

I think this is really good for a thriller film because thriller is very much to do with investigation. By making people question firstly will make them want to watch the whole film and secondly will make it more interesting because they will try to add it all up but will not be able to work out what is going on properly.

Jelly baby Thriller film

In todays lesson we got given some jelly babies to do a a thriller film. We had to use props in the classroom to improvise. This helped me to understand angles and ideas for our real thriller film because it is much easier to move around sweets. We tried out different camera techniques to see which ones worked best. Our storyline was about police chasing and on the look out for a man who is trying to kill someone. When they find him he has pushed the man off the cliff then kleading to the police and the criminal having a fight and the criminal falling off a cliff as well. It was a quick story that we thought of and we chose this one because ahving cliffs made it more interesting for the camera angles.

Ideas for opening scene

In our last lesson we discussed and did a diagram on the board of ideas for our opening scene for out thriller film. We decided that we were defiantly going to use a woman as the main character and make her seem more powerful. We discussed that she should have a sexy attitude but very mysterious. In my opinion i think that we should carry out our idea of having a lot of camera angles and techniques shown. One of our ideas was to start of seeing a towel drop and after see things such as stockings going up, bright red lipstick being put on etc then at the end show her holding a gun,shooting it then the screen go black for the film name.

 I think this is the look we should go for which is very powerful by her facial expression with bright red lips.

Thriller Opening

For our opening of a thriller, we have decided that our main character is going to be female. This will make our opening different to others because normally, the lead character is male. We will use the fact that she is female to our advantage by introducing hints of sexiness that maybe she could use throughout the scene in order to draw in the audience. Our target audience that we are aiming at is for young woman and men, but by targeting women we will have to be very careful with our advertisement as i we make it appear to feminine then some men will not want to view it.  We have used the recently opened film "The Tourist"'s main character Angelina Jolie as a guideline to what we want our main character to appear like.  We have decided on the location in which we are going to film and also on the actors. We have a rough idea for the order of the scenes and what is going to take place in each one.
